The halls were decorated with streamers of orange and black, cardboard jack-o-lanterns hung from the ceiling, accompanied by black bats. Posters for the annual school dance were stuck along the corridor walls and on the front of lockers. Halloween was tomorrow and I loved it, not only because it was scary and horror movies were my thing, but because it was my birthday and I was turning 17. "Hey, how are you feeling? Are you excited yet Frankie?" asked Gerard, my best friend of 14 years. We'd been best friends ever since he asked me to draw with him in kindergarten. "I guess...not really."
"Frank, it's your birthday...don't fuck with me," laughed Gerard.
"Fine, Gee. It is going to be cool, I'm excited.

The bell rung out through the school and I walked with Gerard to biology. It was a silent walk, although there were about a thousand things I could have told him. We stopped at the door, almost perfectly at the same time, before Gerard motioned for me to go ahead of him. He was always such a gentleman. "Thankyou Gee," I smiled.
"My pleasure," he joked. I followed him to two seats in about the middle of the classroom.
"What would you like for your birthday?"
"Oh, Gerard, don't buy me anything,"
"I have too, we've been friends for too long,"
"I don't want you to get me a thing. Don't you dare spend money on me," I warned. Gerard looked at me with big puppy dog eyes for a brief moment before giving in. "Fine."

Our teacher walked in the class with a bunch of textbooks and sat them on her desk. She began to explain about our school dance, but I couldn't care less. I have no one to go with anyway and Gerard will probably be taking one of the many chicks that crush on him. Not that I care. I thought to myself. Gerard paced to the front grabbing a textbook for us to share and sat back down next to me.
"Frank. Frankie, Frank!" Gerard shouted. I shook my head, lost in a daze, intoxicated by his by his incredible scent. "Sorry, I was just thinking?"
"About the person you like, aye?"
I nodded and sighed. "Yeah,"
"It's me isn't it?" Gee laughed jokingly.
"No," I responded frantically, blushing a deep shade of red.
"Frankie, your blushing," he laughed.
"Am not, it's really hot in here, that's all,"
"Yeah, I agree with you,"
Shit, that was close. Besides, liking him is stupid, Gerard ever liking me is impossible.

Class dragged on and luckily it was the last class of the day before heading home. I walked out of class rather slower than usual, but just like every day I walked Gerard to his car, before I started off for home. "Bye Gee," I waved, turning around to leave.
"Iero, get in the car. It's raining and I don't want you walking home in this weather. You might get sick." I stood there silently for a moment, debating his offer for a lift. "Just get in!" Gerard ordered. I wasn't in the mood to argue, I just wanted to get home, but I was happy with any extra time I got to spend with him. I opened the door and sat in the passenger seat, staring awkwardly at Gerard wondering.
"Are you going to the dance?" he asked as he started the car and drove out of the school. I shook my damp hair, "No...are you?"
"Yeah, I'm taking that Lyn-z chick from our music class,"
"Oh" I whispered. I hoped he didn't hear the disappointment in my
"Are you okay?" Gerard asked, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I was kinda hoping you could come hang around, order pizza and watch some horror movies with me. You know...for my birthday?"
"I was going to come over after the dance, if you still want me to come over,"
"Yeah, Sure. If you have the time, you don't have too, I don't really mind," I lied. I did care, I cared a lot.
"I'll be there,"

He pulled up outside my house and I smiled as I opened the door, running quickly undercover. I turned around to face the street, expecting to see Gerard's car gone. He was still there, staring at me. He positioned his hand to his face; motioning to me he would call later. I waved and nodded, watching him wave back. He drove off, opened the door and walked towards my room. "Hey mom, I'm home," I called.
"Hey honey," she replied. I threw my bag down in the corner, flopping down on my bed and pulling my phone from the pocket of my skinny jeans. Just as I did so it rang, Gerard's name flashed on screen. I flipped it open and accepted the call. "Hey," he said.
"Hello,"
"I was just wondering, why don't you come with me to the dance?"
"Really?" I asked, almost squealing.
"Yeah I could set you up with Lyn-z's friend,"
"Oh, nah...I might hang around home,"
"Oh, ok then. Bye Frankie,"
"Bye Gee,"
I hung up and rolled over, kicking off my shoes. I thought he wanted to take me to the dance...what the fuck?

I lay on my bed, my lamp being the only light in my room and I read comics deep into the night, before turning the lamp off and going to sleep.

The rain poured down against my window, a relaxing sound to wake up too in my opinion. My phone rang and I peered at my alarm clock. 7am....who's calling?
I picked up my phone, once again Gerard's name appeared on screen. I accepted the call, despite my tiredness. "Hey Frankie, you awake?"
"No, I'm skydiving," I spat sarcastically.
"Oh...sorry," Gerard laughed. "Are you catching the bus?"
"I was planning on it,"
"Nope, I'm driving you, see you in an hour,"
"Gerard, you ? "
Beep...beep.
"Shit," I exclaimed. Why is he driving me again? This isn't Gerard.
I grabbed a towel from the cupboard and paced to the bathroom. I stripped down and stepped in, turning on the hot water and stared at the tiled floor of the shower, letting the water soak my black hair. I stood under the water for at least 15 minutes before grabbing the shampoo and squeezing a blob onto my hair. I massaged the shampoo into my hair, washed it and stepped out.

I dried myself almost slipping over and rushed to my room to venture for clean clothes. I buried around for 10 minutes to find a clean shirt and a jumper. I pulled on my skinny jeans and my converse, grabbing my bag and running outside to wait for Gerard. He pulled up early and I ran through the rain to Gerard's car, opening the door and sitting in the passenger seat, avoiding eye contact with Gerard.
"Hey Gee, thanks for this,"
"Morning babe..."
I looked at him, eyes wide and mouth agape with shock. "Did I say babe? I meant Frankie. I was just on the phone with Lyn-z," he said frantically. I nodded and remained silent as Gerard drove off to school.

We pulled up to school; neither of us had said a word, which wasn't exactly normal for Gerard. "Are you okay Gee?"
"Yeah,"
"Okay,"

We stepped out of the car just as the bell rung and headed to Music. Yay, this will be fun. Gerard waked through the door first, walking straight to Lyn-z, leaving me alone, so I sat by myself. Stupid bitch, she makes me want to scream and cry. I kept to myself, keeping my head down and doing my work, but every now and then I feel eyes on me, but whenever I look Gerard looks away. It's a little frustrating, I just don't get why he's doing that, so I do the same and begin to stare. He doesn't notice all that often and it's quite entertaining to watch his reaction, but our eyes are never locked for more than a second.

The bell for the end of class rings and I'm the first one to leave. I had no patience to wait for Gerard; he was rather occupied with something else anyway. Hoping Gerard wouldn't notice I was gone I rushed to my locker. "Frankie, wait up!" Gerard yelled. I stopped at my locker, trying to unlock the combination as fast as I could, giving Gerard enough time to catch up.
"What's wrong Frank?"
"Nothing, I'm fine," I stated, throwing my music book in my locker and slamming it shut, storming off. I walked off towards a shady tree, the same tree I always sat under when Gerard was busy chatting up girls. Sometimes I just wished he wasn't so flirtatious. I had to admit, I was jealous, I could never attempt half of the shit he pulls off. I threw my bag down, and sat under the tree, resting my back against the trunk. "What's wrong Frankie?" Gerard asked again, jogging towards me.
"Nothing, I'm fine. I'm going to head home, have fun at the dance. Don't bother coming over later. I'll just see you Monday.
"What did I do?"
"Nothing," I spat, standing up. I threw my bag over my shoulder and marched off, leaving Gerard alone.
"At least let me drive you,"
"No,"

"Mom, I'm home," I yelled.
"Oh, you're home early. What happened?"
"I don't want to talk about it mom,"
"Gerard? Was it Gerard sweetie?"
"Yes, he's taking this girl to the Halloween dance at school,"
"Oh and you want him to come spend your birthday with you,"
"Yeah, is that selfish?"
"No, it's your birthday, I understand. I hate to do this to you sweetie, but I have a meeting tonight at work. Can you stay and hand out candy?"
"Yeah, I guess so, I'm not doing anything better,"
"Thankyou a bunch sweetie. There's a bowl of candy by the door and you're present is on the kitchen table. Happy Birthday sweetie," she smiled, kissing my cheek. "I'll be gone in an hour."

~*~

I sat on my bed with an unwrapped present. It was soft, so without hesitation I tore off the paper to find a black hoodie with 'Night of the Living Dead' printed on the front. I pulled it down over my head and stood in front of the mirror. "Sick," I said to myself. I opened the draw and pulled out my black eyeliner, drawing a perfect black line under each eye, when the doorbell rang. "Coming," I called. I opened the door, standing before me was a vampire, a ghost and a little Frankenstein. "Trick-or-Treat,"
I grabbed the bowl taking 2 lollies out and placing them in each bag. "Thank you," they chimed and continued onto the next house. I shut the door just as the doorbell rang again. I opened it, there was now a pirate and a little fairy dressed all in pink,"
"Aren't you a pretty fairy," I smiled. The little girl giggled as I handed them candy and off they trotted to the next house. I shut the door and walked over to the couch to sit. "Shit," I whispered as someone knocked on the door. I stood up and walked over to the door, opening. "Gerard!"
"Hi, Frankie...trick-or-treat," Gee laughed.
"Why aren't you at the dance with Lyn-z,"
"I wanted to see you, it's your birthday," Gerard stated, stepping inside, kicking the door shut behind him.
"Wouldn't you rather spend it with her?"
"No, I was never taking her to the dance anyway," he admitted shyly.
"What then why did you say you were?"
"To make you jealous,"
"But why would you do that?"
"I saw the way you look at me,"
"What do you mean?"
"I saw the way you blushed yesterday when I asked if you were thinking of me. You're not straight are you?"
I shook my head, tears welling up in my eyes.
"Don't cry Frankie. Please, just...at least let me give you your present,"
"Ok...?"
He stepped forward, his finger pressed lightly under my chin. He brought me up to eye level, his soft lips pressed against mine. I didn't even have time to register the moment. It was too surreal for me to think straight. Not that I'm complaining.
"Gerard? What was that for,"
"Happy birthday,"
"Thank you, but you're ignoring my question."
"I did it because...I have noticed how you act around me; you were just too scared to tell me the truth. I've known you for 14 years, I will always be here for you and you have to remember that. I lied to you about Lyn-z to make you jealous, because...I love you," Gerard confessed.
"Do you mean that?"
"I love you Frankie,"
"I love you too Gee,"
"Happy Halloween," he smiled, placing another kiss, slipping his arm around my waist and pulled me close.
It's not that good, it's shorter than i'm used to....Happy Ieroween.
